October didn’t come here to be subtle—and neither did opal, its dazzling, color-shifting birthstone. Opals are the extroverts of the gem world—flashing rainbows, changing moods, and making sure all eyes are on them.
Most of the world’s opals, about 95% come from Australia—but they’re also found in Ethiopia, Mexico, and even Nevada if you’re lucky. Just a heads-up: opals are a bit delicate, so treat them gently:
- Avoid harsh chemicals (no bleach, perfumes, or household cleaners)
- Take them off before showering, swimming, or exercising
- Store them separately in a soft pouch or cloth to prevent scratch
- Keep them away from extreme heat or sudden temperature changes, which can cause cracks
