In England in the 1840s, brilliantly transparent, multi-colored glazes were applied to relief-modeled earthenware pieces to create a marvelous variety of charming and original effects called Majolica. This is a style also known in Italy and Spain. Mottahedeh's lotus pitcher is a fine example and is an exact hand-painted reproduction of an antique English original.
